Setup guide
From download to your first wipe
Follow these steps in order. Most people are playing on their own server within 30 minutes, and most of that is the server download.
Install the app
Download the installer from your Gumroad receipt email, or from your library on gumroad.com, and run it. It installs for your Windows user only, so it doesn't need administrator rights, and it adds a desktop shortcut.
If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
Activate your key
The first time the app opens, paste the license key from your Gumroad receipt and click Activate. The key is locked to this PC. The app checks it every few hours and keeps working offline for up to 7 days.
Download the server
Click Install / Update at the top of the app. It downloads the Rust dedicated server from Steam (around 10 GB) and adds Carbon, which lets the server run plugins. Use the same button whenever Rust updates.
Start it and join
Click Start server. The first start builds the map, which takes a few minutes. When the status in the bottom-left corner turns green and says Online, open Rust, press F1 and enter:
client.connect 127.0.0.1:28015Windows asks whether RustDedicated can use the network the first time. Allow it, or friends won't be able to connect.
Make yourself the owner
Owners get admin commands and the in-game Studio tools. Find your SteamID64 (the 17-digit number in your Steam profile link, starting with 7656). Paste it into Settings, under Your SteamID64 (owner), and click Save settings. Disconnect and join again to pick it up.
Let friends join
Open the Connect page and click Open ports automatically. Most home routers allow this. Then click Copy next to the join command and send it to your friends.
- If the Router check turns red and mentions CGNAT, your provider shares one address between customers. Skip to step 9 and use a relay instead.
- If automatic setup doesn't work, the page lists exactly which ports to forward in your router's settings.
- You can't join your own server through your public address. On your PC, keep using 127.0.0.1.
Add a custom domain (optional)
A name like play.yourserver.com is easier to share than an IP, and it keeps working when your home IP changes. On the Connect page, under Custom domain, pick one:
- DuckDNS (free): make a name at duckdns.org, then paste the name and your token.
- Cloudflare: for a domain you own. Create an API token with the "Edit zone DNS" template and paste it with the full name.
- No-IP: make a free hostname at noip.com, then sign in with your No-IP details.
Click Save and update. The app keeps the name pointed at your PC while it's open.
Choose who can play
The Privacy page controls access. Click Save and apply after any change.
- Whitelist: only listed players can join. Add them by Steam ID, or click Allow on anyone who was just turned away.
- Server browser: turn listing off to keep the server private. Friends can still join with the address.
- Hide your IP: set up a free UDP tunnel at playit.gg pointing at port 28015, paste the address it gives you, and turn on Players join through my relay. Keep listing off too, because the server browser shows your real IP.
Add plugins
On the Plugins page, click Add plugins and pick the .cs files. They load straight away while the server runs. Most Carbon, Oxide and uMod plugins work as they are. Browse more in the marketplace.
Wipe day
Facepunch forces a wipe on the first Thursday of every month. On the Map & wipe page, choose Map wipe (players keep their blueprints) or Full wipe (everything resets), then click Wipe now. The app backs up your save, rolls a new seed and restarts the server.
If something's wrong
- The status is stuck on "Loading world"
- The first start builds the map and can take 5 to 10 minutes on bigger maps. Watch the Console page: it's working while new lines appear.
- Friends get "Connection attempt failed"
- Check the Connect page. Every port should be green. If the Router check mentions CGNAT, use a relay (step 9).
- "Can't start server because a file is in use"
- A copy of the server is already running. Close the app and open it again; it reconnects to the running server.
- The Studio asks for your SteamID
- Add it in Settings (step 6), save, and join the server again.
